Dreamcatcher at the Chashama Gala

The Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher was one of over eighty art and performance installations chosen for the Chashama Gala and Bizarre Bazaar over the Summer Solstice 2025.

Heralded as “New York’s Wildest Art Party”, this event was an Alice-in-Wonderland maze that commandeered two floors of the Durst building on 42nd Street near Grand Central Station.

The theme of the event was ‘Dreams’ and while many of the installations played out wild and crazy fantasies, the Dreamcatcher provided a serene and meditative space amidst the chaos.


This was the first time the Dreamcatcher had been presented indoors, so I had the opportunity to explore lighting ideas and invited Fred Hatt to create video projections for the piece. He used video footage of sunlight bouncing off water to create a soft rippling lighting effect.

SEPTEMBER


Dreamcatcher at ReViewing Black Mountain College conference UNCA

- Asheville NC






The Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher was presented as a one hour performance installation and artist talk as part of the annual ReViewing Black Mountain College conference held at UNC Asheville.

Each year the conference invites talks, performances and workshops that focus on a specific topic of the BMC legacy. This year’s theme was ‘Performance at Black Mountain College’.


I chose to set up the Dreamcatcher in a courtyard attached to the conference building - and I invited an Asheville based Butoh dancer, Sara Baird, to perform with me.

After performing we held a Q&A talk session to discuss the work and how it related to concepts of performance at Black Mountain College.


I took this opportunity to develop the vocal sound aspect of the project and recorded my voice holding long open tones, which I then layered to create a sound track.

  The Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher PERFORMANCE MODES and THEMES SACRED THEMES The Dreamcatcher is a handcrafted web structure that originates from the Indigenous North American Ojibwe tradition and was shared over time with other Native Nations, eventually being recognized globally as a spiritual object of protection in the dream world.   During performance we apply the act of weaving into a dance and draw upon the Dreamcatcher to symbolize two echoing systems in humanity and in nature.   The Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher PERFORMER GUIDE The Rhizomatic Collective Unconscious Dreamcatcher is a magical, mystical and meditational experience for the performer. We exist as though timeless in a liminal state between human-body, nature-body, mystical-being and art-form. It is a durational installation. Audience members are free to come and go throughout the duration. Individual performers can take breaks as needed - rotating in and out of performance. The Dreamcatcher is a large sculpture. It is usually hung from a structure about 10 to 15 feet high. It is made out of long tendrils of different materials - mostly fabrics - with other objects attached. All in white. The tendrils hang down and during the course of the performance, the performers gradually add materials - extending the form further into the space.
